Do you need a fish pass?

Then look no further.

Fishway Engineering are Consulting Engineers based in Lewes, East Sussex, England, specialising in the design of all types of fish pass and associated works including fish counters and traps

The Directors, A L (Tony) Woolnough MSc CEng MICE MCIWEM MIFM and R J (Dick) Roberts IEng AMICE MIFM, collectively have over 35 years experience in this field

Fish passStudies have shown that the enhancement of migratory and non migratory fish stocks can represent an outstanding investment in terms of social and economic benefits.  As pollution in our waterways is progressively eliminated, a major remaining obstacle to an increase in fish stocks, with the associated increases in tourist and leisure activity, is the lack of fish passage facilities.  The traditional means of providing a passage up rivers for fish are large, expensive structures.  Fishway Engineering have designed a range of modularised fish and elver passes catering for species including salmon, sea trout, shad, lampreys, elvers and coarse fish, which offer cost effective solutions to fish passage problems.  Fishway Engineering are also specialist in the design of fish counting stations.  We work closely with all manufacturers of Fish Counting Instruments and we have been appointed by Vaki of Iceland as their UK Agent for the RiverWatcher Fish Counter.

Fishway Engineering offers a comprehensive service designed to provide innovative and economic solutions to the problems of ascent and descent facilities in rivers and waterway systems for migratory and other fish species.  Tony Woolnough holds world-wide patents for the Fishway Gate, which is an upstream water level control gate with integral fish pass.

We have designed over 200 fish passes throughout the UK, Europe, Paraguay and the USA including 8 major tidal barrage projects.  We work independently or in partnership with other Consulting Engineers.  Our Client list includes all the UK Environment Agency and River Boards, the European Economic Community, Government Departments, Major Consulting Engineers,  Civil Engineering Contractors, Private Individuals, Angling Clubs, and the like.  Our work has been recognised by the award of the Trent Trust and Churchill Travelling Fellowships which allowed us to study our trade throughout the USA and Canada.

We provide all aspects of fish pass design, including surveying, economic evaluation, recommendations on siting, outline and detailed designs for civils works, securing Environment Agency or other Authority approvals, estimates, supervision of construction and operation.  We can also act as expert witnesses in this field at Public Enquiry’s, Parliamentary Committees and the like.  The aim is to permit the requirements of the U.K. Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Acts (and similar legislation in other countries) to be fulfilled economically and with minimal administrative effort on the part of the Client.  Various levels of service can be offered depending on the Client’s needs, from initial consultations with reports and recommendations, to complete detailed design and contract supervision.

We have developed a range of modularised fish and elver pass systems together with a range of associated hardware which includes debris shields, covers and various types of screening systems, fabricated in either aluminium or stainless steel.  We work in close liaison with Rivertec Ltd a company that manufactures these systems under license in the UK.  Our approach is to identify the biological and site specific criteria and then produce recommendations and designs that solve the various problems taking into account economics, safety, aesthetics etc. to obtain the optimum solution.  If the remedy for the problem does not suit our modularised systems then we will design a more traditional structure.
